MARCH 2024

We had a great discussion on the material covered in Mary Roddy's amazing program, Jumping the Pond: Connecting Immigrants to Their Homeland - 1870s to 1930s. Key take-aways included:

-  Thinking of passenger lists as FAN clubs is a game-changer. One member reported "hitting gold" by studying the fellow passengers on her immigrant's ship to the U.S.. She was ecstatic to find three ancestors this way. Mary's insights on delayed birth records and naturalization were also helpful.

-  A member shared an additional website she discovered: ImmigrantShips.net. It has a tremendous amount of information provided by active and dedicated volunteers. Be sure to check it out.

- A member emailed that for those using the Open Office Spreadsheet (vs Excel), they can apply Mary's census tip by doing the following:
  1. Do as Mary stated and access the drop down index and copy it.
  2. Open the resulting spreadsheet.
  3. Right click on the opened spreadsheet for the drop down menu, then click on "Paste Specal" > on the next panel, click on "Unformatted Text" > click "OK" and then you have it.

Mary Roddy's program are always great, but this one was exceptional. Everyone also appreciated that it covered the challenges associated with researching immigration during the 1870s-1930s time period.
